The capacities listed below are approximate. Actual refill quantities may vary slightly depending on service conditions and how completely a system has been drained. When refilling the Mitsubishi Outlander, follow the applicable procedure in the "9. Do-it-yourself" section and use the specified level or checking method to determine the correct refill quantity.

Fuel information
Use regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index), equivalent to a Research Octane Number of 91.
CAUTION
- Using fuel that does not meet the specified requirements may adversely affect the Mitsubishi Outlander emission control system, engine performance, and potentially warranty coverage.
- Never use leaded gasoline under any circumstances. Leaded fuel will damage the three-way catalytic converter.
- Do not use fuel containing more than 15% ethanol. The Mitsubishi Outlander is not designed to operate on fuel with an ethanol concentration above 15%. Using fuel with more than 15% ethanol in a vehicle not specifically designed for it can adversely affect emission control components and systems. Damage resulting from the use of such fuel is not covered by the Mitsubishi Motors New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- Do not use gasoline containing the octane-enhancing additive methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT). Fuel containing MMT may adversely affect vehicle performance and emissions. Because fuel dispensers are not always labeled to identify MMT content, you may need to ask the gasoline retailer for additional information. Federal and California regulations prohibit MMT in reformulated gasoline.
- U.S. government regulations require ethanol dispensing pumps to display a small square orange-and-black label identifying the common fuel abbreviation or the applicable ethanol percentage for that region.
Gasoline specifications
Mitsubishi Motors recommends using gasoline that meets World-Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC) specifications whenever such fuel is available.
The WWFC specification was developed with participation from automobile manufacturers to support consistent fuel quality, improved vehicle performance, and proper emission control system operation. Ask the fuel station operator or manager whether the gasoline being sold meets WWFC requirements.
Reformulated gasoline
Some fuel suppliers offer reformulated gasoline specifically blended to help reduce vehicle emissions.
Mitsubishi Motors supports efforts to improve air quality and recommends using reformulated gasoline in the Mitsubishi Outlander when suitable fuel is available.
Gasoline containing oxygenates
Some gasoline suppliers sell fuels containing oxygenates such as ethanol, MTBE, or methanol, and the presence of these additives may not always be prominently advertised.
Mitsubishi Motors does not recommend using fuel when the oxygenate concentration or its compatibility with the Mitsubishi Outlander cannot be readily confirmed. If you are uncertain about the fuel composition, ask the service station operator or fuel retailer before filling the tank.
If oxygenate-blended gasoline is used, observe the following requirements carefully because unsuitable blends may cause driveability problems and/or fuel system damage.
- The fuel must be unleaded and have an octane rating no lower than the minimum rating specified for regular unleaded gasoline.
- If an oxygenate blend other than a methanol blend is used, the fuel should contain no more than 10% oxygenate.
MTBE, however, may be present in concentrations of up to 15%.
- If a methanol blend is used, it must contain no more than 5% methanol (methyl alcohol or wood alcohol). The blend must also contain an appropriate quantity of suitable cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors. Methanol blends that are not correctly formulated with the required cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors can damage the fuel system and/or cause vehicle performance problems. At present, sufficient information is not available to confirm that all methanol blends are suitable for use in Mitsubishi Motors vehicles.
If driveability problems such as engine stalling, hesitation, or difficult hot starting occur after using oxygenate-blended gasoline, discontinue use of that fuel and switch as soon as practical to a non-oxygenated gasoline or to fuel containing a low concentration of MTBE.
Take care to avoid spilling gasoline while refueling the Mitsubishi Outlander, particularly around painted exterior surfaces.
Gasoline containing oxygenates can damage or discolor paint if it is allowed to remain on the vehicle surface.
E-15 fuel
E-15 fuel is a blend containing approximately 15% fuel ethanol and 85% unleaded gasoline. E-15 should only be used in vehicles specifically designed and approved to operate on this fuel. U.S. government regulations require ethanol fuel dispensing pumps to display a small square orange-and-black label showing the common fuel abbreviation or the applicable ethanol percentage for that region.
E-85 fuel
E-85 is a fuel blend containing approximately 85% ethanol and 15% unleaded gasoline. It is intended only for Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFVs). Do not use E-85 in the Mitsubishi Outlander unless the vehicle is specifically identified as compatible with this fuel.
U.S. government regulations require ethanol fuel dispensing pumps to display a small square orange-and-black label identifying the common abbreviation or the appropriate ethanol percentage for the region.
Fuel containing MMT
MMT, or methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, is an additive used to increase gasoline octane rating.
Mitsubishi Motors does not recommend using fuel that contains MMT. Gasoline containing this additive may adversely affect Mitsubishi Outlander performance, including operation of the emissions control system. Because not all fuel dispensers identify MMT content on the pump, contact the gasoline retailer if you are uncertain whether a particular fuel contains this additive.
Aftermarket fuel additives
Mitsubishi Motors does not recommend adding commercially available aftermarket fuel additives such as fuel injector cleaners, octane boosters, intake valve deposit removers, or similar products. Many additives intended to remove gum, varnish, or deposits contain active solvents or related chemicals that may damage components of the fuel system or engine.
Octane rating tips
Using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than the specified minimum can cause persistent and severe "spark knock," which is heard as a metallic knocking or rapping sound. Severe or prolonged spark knock may cause engine damage. If persistent heavy spark knock occurs even when gasoline with the specified octane rating is used, or if continuous spark knock is heard while maintaining a steady speed on a level road, have the Mitsubishi Outlander inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Continuing to operate the vehicle without correcting this condition may be considered vehicle misuse, for which Mitsubishi Motors is not responsible.
Incorrect ignition timing can also cause spark knock, engine run-on after shutdown, and/or overheating. These conditions may increase fuel consumption and can lead to engine damage. If any of these symptoms occur, have the vehicle inspected promptly.
It is recommended that you visit an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for diagnosis and service.
Occasional light spark knock for a brief period during acceleration or while climbing a hill is generally not a cause for concern. A short period of light knock under heavy engine load may occur while the engine is operating efficiently.
Engine oil and oil filter recommendation

- API service symbol
Selecting the correct oil
Choosing the correct engine oil grade, quality, and viscosity is essential for maintaining satisfactory engine performance, durability, and service life. Refer to "Capacities and recommended fluids/lubricants" for the applicable specifications. Mitsubishi Motors recommends using an energy-conserving engine oil where specified to help improve fuel economy.
Use only engine oils that meet the required American Petroleum Institute (API) certification or International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) certification, together with the specified SAE viscosity grade. Approved oils display the applicable API or ILSAC certification mark on the front of the container. Engine oil that does not carry the required quality certification should not be used in the Mitsubishi Outlander because unsuitable oil may result in reduced lubrication performance or engine damage.
Oil additives
Mitsubishi Motors does not recommend using supplemental engine oil additives. Additional additives are unnecessary when the correct engine oil is used and the prescribed maintenance intervals are followed.
Do not use engine oil that contains foreign material, has been contaminated, or has previously been used.
Oil viscosity
Engine oil viscosity, or thickness, changes as temperature changes. For this reason, the correct SAE viscosity grade should be selected according to the expected ambient temperatures in which the Mitsubishi Outlander will be operated before the next oil change. Using an engine oil viscosity other than the recommended grade may reduce lubrication effectiveness and could result in serious engine damage.
Selecting the correct oil filter
Your new Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped from the factory with a high-quality genuine Mitsubishi Motors oil filter. When replacement is required, use a genuine Mitsubishi Motors oil filter or an equivalent filter that meets the necessary specifications for the reasons described under "Change intervals".
Change intervals
The recommended engine oil and oil filter replacement intervals are based on the use of oils and filters that meet the specified quality requirements. Using engine oil or an oil filter of lower or incorrect quality, or extending service beyond the recommended oil and filter change intervals, can reduce engine durability and shorten service life. Engine damage resulting from improper maintenance, unsuitable oil or filter quality, or incorrect oil viscosity is not covered by the Mitsubishi Motors New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
The Mitsubishi Outlander engine is filled at the factory with high-quality engine oil. There is no need to replace this original oil before the first scheduled oil change interval unless otherwise required by the operating conditions or maintenance schedule.
The appropriate engine oil and filter replacement interval also depends on how the Mitsubishi Outlander is operated. Driving under the following conditions may require more frequent oil and oil filter changes:
- repeated short-distance driving in cold outside temperatures
- frequent driving in dusty or dirty environments
- extended periods of engine idling
- frequent stop-and-go commuting or heavy urban traffic
Climate control system refrigerant and lubricant recommendations
The climate control system in your Mitsubishi Motors vehicle must be charged with the specified refrigerant and compressor oil or equivalent. See the air conditioner specification label.
- HFO-1234yf (R-1234yf)
- A/C system oil ND-OIL12(PAG) or equivalent
CAUTION
- Use only the specified refrigerant and compressor oil, or approved equivalents. Using another type of refrigerant or lubricant can cause severe damage to the climate control system and may require replacement of major air conditioning components.
The HFO-1234yf (R-1234yf) refrigerant used in the Mitsubishi Outlander climate control system does not damage the earth's ozone layer. However, government regulations may require refrigerant to be properly recovered and recycled whenever the automotive climate control system is serviced.
Authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealers have trained technicians and specialized equipment designed to recover, handle, and recycle climate control system refrigerant correctly.
When service or repair of the Mitsubishi Outlander climate control system is required, it is recommended that you visit an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
