Most common factors contributing to vehicle corrosion
- Accumulation of moisture-retaining dirt, mud, road debris, and other contaminants inside body panel sections, cavities, seams, and other areas where moisture can remain trapped.
- Damage to the paint finish or other protective coatings caused by gravel, stone chips, minor impacts, or small traffic accidents that expose underlying metal surfaces.
Environmental factors influence the rate of corrosion
Moisture
Accumulations of sand, dirt, mud, and water on the underside of the Mitsubishi Outlander can hold moisture against metal surfaces and accelerate corrosion.
Wet floor coverings or carpeting may not dry completely while left inside the vehicle. Remove and dry them thoroughly when necessary to help prevent moisture from remaining against the floor panels and causing corrosion.
Relative humidity
Corrosion develops more rapidly in areas with high relative humidity, especially where temperatures remain above freezing, atmospheric pollution is present, or road salt and other de-icing materials are used frequently.
Temperature
Higher temperatures can accelerate corrosion, particularly on components located in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas where moisture and contaminants are slow to evaporate.
Air pollution
Industrial pollutants, salt carried in the air in coastal regions, and extensive use of road salt can significantly accelerate corrosion of the Mitsubishi Outlander. Road salt can also contribute to deterioration of painted and protective exterior surfaces.
To protect your vehicle from corrosion
- Wash and wax the Mitsubishi Outlander regularly to remove corrosive contaminants and help protect painted exterior surfaces.
- Inspect the paint finish periodically for small chips, scratches, and other damage, and repair affected areas as soon as practical before corrosion can begin.
- Keep the drain holes along the lower edges of the doors open and free of debris so trapped water can drain properly.
- Inspect the underbody regularly for accumulations of sand, mud, dirt, or road salt. If these materials are present, rinse them away thoroughly with clean water as soon as possible.
CAUTION
- NEVER attempt to remove dirt, sand, mud, or other debris from the passenger compartment by flushing the interior with a hose. Use a vacuum cleaner or another suitable dry-cleaning method instead.
- Do not allow water or other liquids to contact electronic components, connectors, switches, or electrical equipment inside the Mitsubishi Outlander, as moisture may cause malfunction or permanent damage.
Chemicals used for de-icing road surfaces are highly corrosive. Repeated exposure can accelerate corrosion and deterioration of underbody components, including the exhaust system, fuel lines, brake lines, brake cables, floor pan, and fenders.
During winter, especially in areas where road salt or other de-icing chemicals are commonly used, clean the underbody of the Mitsubishi Outlander periodically to remove accumulated corrosive material.
