This Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The primary purpose of the EDR is to record certain vehicle information during a crash or near-crash event, such as an airbag deployment or an impact with a road obstacle. The recorded data can help explain how the vehicle's systems were operating immediately before and during the event. The EDR is designed to capture information related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a relatively short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle may record information such as:

  • How various vehicle systems were operating at the time of the event;
  • Whether the driver and passenger seat belts were buckled or fastened;
  • How far, if at all, the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,
  • How fast the Mitsubishi Outlander was traveling.

This information can help provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding a crash, near-crash event, and any resulting injuries.

NOTE

  • The EDR records data only when the Mitsubishi Outlander is involved in a nontrivial crash or similar event. The EDR does not record data during normal driving conditions and does not record personal information such as the driver's name, gender, age, or the location of a crash.

    However, other parties, including law enforcement agencies, may combine EDR information with personally identifying information that is routinely collected during a crash investigation.

Reading information stored by an EDR requires specialized equipment as well as physical access to the vehicle or the EDR itself. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties such as law enforcement agencies may be able to retrieve the recorded information if they have the appropriate equipment and authorized access to the Mitsubishi Outlander or its EDR.

Additional data recording

If the Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped with optional MI-PILOT Assist or other driver assistance features, it may also include a supplemental data recording function. This additional recording capability is intended to help evaluate how MI-PILOT Assist and related driver assistance systems performed during certain nontrivial crash or near-crash situations.

The supplemental recording system is specifically designed to capture information including:

  • Driver operation of the accelerator, brakes, steering, and related controls
  • Detection status of a vehicle ahead and roadway lane markers
  • Vehicle information including distance to the vehicle ahead and lateral position within the roadway
  • Information concerning the operation and status of MI-PILOT Assist and other driver assistance features
  • Diagnostic information related to malfunctions of MI-PILOT Assist or other driver assistance systems
  • External images captured by the front camera, available only when the SRS airbag system or Forward Collision Mitigation System [FCM] is activated

MI-PILOT Assist and the other driver assistance systems do not record conversations, sounds, or images from inside the Mitsubishi Outlander passenger compartment.

Specialized equipment and access to the vehicle or recording unit are required to retrieve this supplemental information. The supplemental data will only be accessed with the consent of the vehicle owner or lessee, or when access is otherwise required or permitted by law. If the information is downloaded, Mitsubishi Motors and third parties authorized by Mitsubishi Motors may use the recorded data to help evaluate and improve Mitsubishi Motors vehicle safety performance.

Mitsubishi Motors and third parties authorized by Mitsubishi Motors will not disclose or provide the recorded information to another party except under the following circumstances:

  • With the consent of the vehicle owner or lessee
  • In response to an official request from law enforcement, a court order, a governmental agency, or another legally enforceable request
  • For research purposes after the information has been modified so that it can no longer be associated with a specific vehicle or vehicle owner and has therefore been anonymized
