The three-way catalyst is an emission-control component installed in the Mitsubishi Outlander exhaust system.

Inside the three-way catalyst, exhaust gases are processed at high temperatures to help reduce the amount of harmful pollutants released from the exhaust system.

WARNING

  • Exhaust gases and exhaust system components become extremely hot during operation. Keep people, animals, and flammable materials away from the exhaust system.
  • Do not stop or park the vehicle over flammable materials such as dry grass, paper, rags, or similar items. Contact with hot exhaust components could ignite these materials and cause a fire.

CAUTION

  • Do not use leaded gasoline. Deposits caused by leaded fuel can seriously reduce the ability of the three-way catalyst to control exhaust pollutants.
  • Keep the engine properly maintained. Malfunctions in the ignition, fuel injection, or electrical systems can allow an excessively rich fuel mixture to enter the three-way catalyst and cause it to overheat. Do not continue driving if the engine misfires, if there is a noticeable loss of performance, or if other unusual operating conditions occur.

Have the Mitsubishi Outlander inspected as soon as possible. It is recommended that this service be performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

  • Avoid driving with the fuel level extremely low. Running out of fuel may cause engine misfiring, which can damage the three-way catalyst.
  • Do not race the engine while it is warming up.
  • Do not attempt to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle.
