WARNING
- Never continue driving the Mitsubishi Outlander if the engine is overheating. Continuing to operate the vehicle under these conditions could cause severe engine damage and may create a risk of fire.
- Never open the hood while steam is escaping from the engine compartment.
- Never remove the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot. The cooling system may be under high pressure, and removing a cap while hot can cause scalding coolant or steam to spray out, resulting in serious burns or other injuries.
- If steam or coolant is escaping from the engine compartment, stay clear of the vehicle until it is safe to approach in order to avoid burns.
- The engine cooling fan may start automatically at any time when coolant temperature rises above its predetermined operating level.
- Keep your hands, hair, jewelry, loose clothing, and other objects away from the cooling fan and drive belts. Contact with moving components can cause serious injury.
Warning labels (example)

If the Mitsubishi Outlander begins to overheat, which may be indicated by an extremely high temperature gauge reading, reduced engine power, unusual noises, or other abnormal operating conditions, follow the procedure below carefully:
1. Move the vehicle safely off the roadway and stop in a secure location. Apply the parking brake firmly.
2. Push the park button to shift the transmission into the P (Park) position.
Do not stop the engine at this stage.
3. Switch off the air conditioner. Open all windows, set the heater or air conditioner temperature control to the maximum hot setting, and set the fan to high speed to help remove excess heat from the engine cooling system.
4. Exit the vehicle and carefully look and listen for steam or coolant escaping from the radiator or engine compartment before opening the hood. If steam or coolant is escaping, turn off the engine immediately. Do not open the hood further until the visible steam or coolant discharge has stopped.
5. Once no steam or coolant is escaping and it is safe to do so, open the engine hood carefully.
WARNING
- If steam or hot coolant is coming from the engine compartment, remain at a safe distance until the discharge has stopped to prevent serious burns.
6. Visually inspect the drive belt for looseness or obvious damage. Check whether the engine cooling fan is operating, and inspect the radiator hoses and radiator for signs of coolant leakage. If coolant is leaking or the cooling fan is not operating, stop the engine.
WARNING
- Keep your hands, hair, jewelry, clothing, and other objects away from the engine belts and cooling fan while inspecting the Mitsubishi Outlander. The engine cooling fan can start unexpectedly at any time.
7. After the engine has cooled sufficiently, check the coolant level in the reservoir while the engine is running. Add coolant to the reservoir if necessary. Have the cause of the overheating inspected and repaired as soon as possible. It is recommended that you visit an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service.
