WARNING
- Do not place objects on the steering wheel pad or on top of the instrument panel.
Do not position any item between an occupant and the steering wheel or instrument panel. If a front airbag inflates, loose objects may be propelled through the passenger compartment and cause serious injury.
- Do not place sharp-edged objects on the front passenger seat. Heavy items that can leave a lasting indentation in the seat cushion must also be avoided. These objects may damage the seat or the occupant classification sensors, also known as weight sensors, and interfere with correct operation of the Mitsubishi Outlander airbag system.
- Do not clean the front passenger seat with water, acidic products or hot-steam cleaning equipment. Moisture, chemicals or excessive heat may damage the seat materials or occupant classification sensors.
Damage to these components can affect airbag operation and increase the risk of serious injury in a collision.
- Several front airbag system components become extremely hot immediately after deployment. Do not touch these parts, as contact may cause severe burns.
- Do not make unauthorized changes to any airbag system component or wiring. Modifications may cause accidental airbag deployment, prevent correct inflation or damage the Supplemental Restraint System.
- Do not modify the Mitsubishi Outlander electrical system, suspension or front body structure without authorization. Changes to these areas may interfere with the sensors or other components required for proper front airbag operation.
- Tampering with the front airbag system can result in serious personal injury.
This includes modifying the steering wheel or instrument panel, covering the steering wheel pad, placing material over the airbag area above the instrument panel or installing additional trim around an airbag module.
- Removing or altering the front passenger seat may affect the occupant classification and airbag systems, potentially resulting in improper airbag operation and serious injury.
- Do not modify or tamper with the front passenger seat. Never add padding to the seat cushion or install seat covers, upholstery or trim that has not been specifically designed to permit correct airbag and sensor operation. Do not store objects beneath the front passenger seat or wedge items between the seat cushion and seatback. Such objects may interfere with the occupant classification sensors and cause the front passenger airbag system to operate incorrectly.
- Do not make unauthorized changes to any component or wiring in the seat belt system. The front airbag system uses information from the seat belt equipment, and modifications may interfere with its operation. Tampering with the seat belt system may result in serious injury.
- Mitsubishi Motors recommends having all work on or around the front airbags performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Installation of electrical equipment should also be completed by qualified personnel familiar with the Supplemental Restraint System. The SRS wiring harnesses* must not be modified, disconnected or improperly routed.
Do not use unauthorized electrical test equipment, probes or diagnostic devices on the Mitsubishi Outlander airbag circuits.
- Have a cracked windshield replaced immediately by a qualified repair facility.
A damaged windshield may affect components or operating conditions associated with the airbag system.
- Never allow more than one person, whether an adult or child, to occupy the same seat. Each occupant must use an individual seating position and restraint.
- Do not remove the front passenger head restraint except when removal is necessary to install a forward-facing child restraint correctly. Reinstall it before the seat is used normally.
- Do not remove the vehicle seats or seat belts.
- Do not modify or replace a seat or seat belt with an unsuitable component, as this may affect the operation of the restraint and airbag systems.
- Do not place a floor mat or any other object over the seat rails. An obstruction may interfere with seat movement, wiring or sensor operation.
- Do not strike, drop or otherwise subject the airbag and occupant classification sensors to impact.
*The SRS wiring harness connectors are colored yellow or orange so they can be identified easily during inspection and service.
When selling the Mitsubishi Outlander, inform the new owner that the vehicle is equipped with an Advanced Airbag System and direct them to the relevant safety information and operating precautions in this Owner's Manual.
