The Mitsubishi Outlander SRS airbags are designed to activate during certain frontal or side impacts in which occupants could suffer severe injuries even when their seat belts are fastened correctly.
Airbag deployment may not occur when collision energy is absorbed, redirected or distributed through the vehicle body before reaching the activation threshold. The amount of visible vehicle damage, or the absence of obvious damage, does not necessarily indicate whether the SRS airbag system operated correctly.
When the SRS airbag will deploy
Driver and front passenger airbags and knee airbags
The driver and front passenger airbags and SRS knee airbags are designed to inflate during higher-severity frontal collisions. The illustrations below show examples of impact conditions that may result in deployment.

The driver and front passenger airbags and knee airbags are designed to deploy when the Mitsubishi Outlander experiences a frontal impact exceeding the force of an approximately 16 MPH (25 km/h) collision with a solid wall that does not move or deform.
These front and knee airbag systems may also deploy when the vehicle sustains a severe impact to the undercarriage, even when the primary direction of the collision is not directly frontal.

- Striking a curb, pavement edge or another hard surface at high speed.
- Dropping into a deep hole or ditch and sustaining a severe underbody impact.
- Landing heavily on the ground after the vehicle becomes airborne.
Front center airbag, front and second row seat side airbags and curtain airbags
The front center airbag, front and second-row seat-mounted side airbags and Side Curtain SRS airbags are designed to inflate during higher-severity side collisions. The following illustrations show representative impact conditions that may activate these systems.
(Front center airbag and front and second row seat side airbag system)

(Curtain airbag system)

- The front center airbag, front and second-row seat-mounted side airbags and curtain airbags may deploy when the Mitsubishi Outlander experiences a qualifying side impact.
When the SRS airbag may not deploy
The SRS airbags may not inflate when the impact force, direction or duration does not reach the threshold required for deployment.
For example, if the Mitsubishi Outlander strikes an object that can move, bend or deform during impact, such as a parked vehicle or sign pole, some collision energy may be absorbed by that object and the airbags may not deploy.
CAUTION
- These illustrations show only representative examples. It is not possible to depict every collision in which an SRS airbag may or may not deploy. Every occupant must wear a seat belt correctly at all times, regardless of the expected airbag response.
Driver and front passenger airbags and knee airbags

- Striking a parked vehicle of a similar size or class.
- Colliding with a solid utility pole.

- Running underneath the liftgate or rear structure of a truck.
- Experiencing an offset frontal impact with a guardrail.
Front center airbag, front and second row seat side airbags and curtain airbags

- A side collision occurring at an angle rather than directly against the passenger compartment.
- A side impact involving a motorcycle or another two-wheeled vehicle.

- A side collision concentrated on the engine compartment or luggage compartment rather than the occupant area.
- A vehicle rollover in circumstances that do not meet the applicable deployment conditions.

- An offset frontal collision with a guardrail.
- A collision with a narrow object such as a pole.
When the SRS airbag will not deploy
After an SRS airbag has inflated, that airbag module cannot deploy again if the Mitsubishi Outlander is involved in a second collision with another vehicle or object.
Each SRS airbag is designed for a single deployment and must be replaced after it has inflated, together with any other components specified for replacement following activation.
The following illustrations show additional examples of collisions in which the listed airbags are not designed to deploy.
Driver and front passenger airbags and knee airbags

- A collision from the side or rear, which does not create the frontal forces required for front and knee airbag deployment.
- A vehicle rollover without a qualifying frontal impact.
Front center airbag, front and second row seat side airbags and curtain airbags

- A frontal collision with a parked or moving vehicle when the required side-impact conditions are not present.
- A collision from the rear.
