WARNING

  • The three-point seat belt must be placed in Automatic Locking Retractor [ALR] mode when securing a child restraint. If ALR mode is not activated, the restraint may not be held firmly against the vehicle seat.

A loose or unstable child restraint could tip, shift or move during sudden braking or a collision, increasing the risk of serious injury to the child.

Do not use the lower anchors when the combined weight of the child and child restraint exceeds 65 lb (29.5 kg). If the total weight is greater than 65 lb (29.5 kg), install the restraint with the Mitsubishi Outlander seat belt rather than the lower anchors. Always observe the child restraint manufacturer's weight limits and follow every installation instruction supplied with the restraint.

Follow these steps to install a rear-facing child restraint with the vehicle seat belt in an approved second row or third row seating position:

 Rear-facing - step 1

1. Infant restraints must be installed in the rear-facing direction and must never be placed on the front passenger seat. Position the child restraint securely on the selected rear seat and follow the restraint manufacturer's instructions for orientation and recline angle.

  • Move the seat where the child restraint will be installed to its most rearward position.
  • Adjust the seatback three positions rearward from its most upright setting.

 Rear-facing - step 2

2. Route the seat belt through the designated belt path on the child restraint, then insert the tongue into the correct buckle until you hear and feel it latch securely.

Follow the child restraint manufacturer's belt-routing diagram carefully, making sure the webbing lies flat and is not twisted, folded or routed through the wrong opening.

 Rear-facing - step 3

3. Pull the shoulder belt slowly from the retractor until the webbing is fully extended. Full extension activates the Automatic Locking Retractor [ALR] mode, also known as child restraint mode. The belt will return to Emergency Locking Retractor [ELR] mode only after it has been unbuckled and allowed to retract completely.

4. Allow the seat belt to retract through the retractor. Pull upward on the shoulder portion to remove loose webbing from the belt path and confirm that the ALR mechanism prevents the belt from extending again.

5. Remove any remaining slack from the seat belt. Press firmly downward and rearward at the center of the child restraint to compress the Mitsubishi Outlander seat cushion and seatback while pulling the shoulder belt upward. Continue tightening until the restraint sits securely against the vehicle seat.

 Rear-facing - step 6

6. Test the installation before placing the child in the restraint. Hold the child restraint close to the seat belt path and push it firmly from side to side. Movement at the belt path must not exceed 1 inch (25 mm). Pull the restraint forward as well to confirm that the locked seat belt holds it securely.

If the restraint moves too far, remove additional belt slack and test it again. If a secure installation cannot be achieved, try another approved rear seating position or use a different child restraint that fits the Mitsubishi Outlander seat and belt arrangement correctly. Not every child restraint is compatible with every vehicle or seating position.

7. Check the child restraint before every use to confirm that it remains securely installed and that the seat belt is still locked in ALR mode. If the belt extends freely or the restraint has become loose, repeat steps 1 through 6.

After removing the child restraint, unfasten the seat belt and allow the webbing to retract completely. Full retraction cancels ALR child restraint mode and returns the seat belt to normal ELR operation.
