The front airbags, knee airbags, seat-mounted side airbags, curtain airbags and seat belt pretensioners are designed for a single activation only.

After deployment, the SRS airbag warning light will normally remain illuminated unless the warning circuit itself has been damaged. Activated airbag and pretensioner components must be repaired and/or replaced as soon as possible. Mitsubishi Motors recommends having this work performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

Whenever maintenance or repair work is performed on the Mitsubishi Outlander, inform the technician about the locations of the front airbags, knee airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags, seat belt pretensioners and related components. The ignition switch should remain in the LOCK position while work is carried out under the hood or inside the passenger compartment.

WARNING

  • Once a front airbag, knee airbag, seat-mounted side airbag or curtain airbag has inflated, that module cannot operate again and must be replaced. Activated seat belt pretensioners and the affected airbag modules must also be replaced. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service. Deployed airbag modules and pretensioner assemblies cannot be repaired or reused.
  • The front airbag, knee airbag, side airbag, curtain airbag and pretensioner systems should be inspected whenever the front, side or another relevant area of the vehicle has sustained impact damage. Mitsubishi Motors recommends having this inspection completed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer, even when no airbag deployment is visible.
  • If an airbag or pretensioner must be disposed of, or if the vehicle is being dismantled or scrapped, Mitsubishi Motors recommends taking the vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Approved disposal procedures are described in the applicable Mitsubishi Motors Service Manual. Incorrect handling may cause unintended activation and serious personal injury.
  • After an impact from any direction, the Occupant Classification Sensor [OCS] should be inspected to confirm that it continues to operate correctly. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service.

The OCS should be checked even when no airbags deploy during the impact. Failure to verify correct sensor operation may cause the front passenger airbag system to classify the seat improperly, which could lead to incorrect airbag deployment and serious injury or death.

  • When ownership of the Mitsubishi Outlander is transferred to another person, inform the new owner that the vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System and direct them to the applicable warnings, operating information and service procedures in this Owner's Manual.
  • Before junking, dismantling or scrapping the vehicle, take it to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer so the SRS airbags and seat belt pretensioners can be made safe for disposal.
  • If any of the following components must be modified to accommodate a person with a disability, operation of the Advanced Airbag System may be significantly affected. Consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer before any modification is performed.
