WARNING

  • The seat belt pretensioners are designed to activate only once.

After activation, a load limiter within the seat belt system may allow a controlled amount of webbing to extend, helping reduce force against the occupant's chest and lowering the risk of certain injuries. The pretensioner, load limiter, retractor and buckle must then be replaced together as a complete assembly.

  • If the Mitsubishi Outlander is involved in a collision and a pretensioner does not activate, the pretensioner system must still be inspected and repaired if necessary. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service.
  • Do not make unauthorized changes to any component or wiring associated with the pretensioner system. Modifications may damage the system or cause accidental activation. Tampering with the pretensioners can result in serious personal injury.
  • Mitsubishi Motors recommends having all work on or near the pretensioner system performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Installation of electrical equipment should also be completed by qualified personnel familiar with the restraint system. Do not use unauthorized electrical test equipment, probes or diagnostic devices on pretensioner circuits.
  • If a pretensioner must be disposed of, or if the vehicle is being scrapped, Mitsubishi Motors recommends having the work performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Approved disposal procedures are provided in the applicable Mitsubishi Motors Service Manual. Incorrect handling or disposal may cause unintended activation and personal injury.

The pretensioner system may operate together with the airbag system during certain types of collisions.

Working with the seat belt retractor, the pretensioner rapidly removes slack from the belt when the Mitsubishi Outlander experiences a qualifying impact. This helps hold occupants in the front and second-row outboard seats more securely against their seatbacks during the early stages of a collision.

The pretensioner mechanism is integrated with the seat belt retractor. Seat belts equipped with pretensioners are fastened, adjusted and released in the same manner as conventional three-point seat belts.

When a pretensioner activates, occupants may hear a loud noise and notice the release of a smoke-like residue. This residue is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. Avoid inhaling it whenever possible, however, because it may irritate the throat or cause temporary choking or breathing discomfort. Anyone with a history of asthma or another respiratory condition should move into fresh air as soon as it is safe to do so.

Each pretensioner can activate only once and cannot be reused after deployment.

Following activation, the load limiter may permit a measured amount of seat belt webbing to extend, helping manage force against the occupant's chest while the belt continues to provide restraint. The activated pretensioner and load limiter must be replaced together with the associated retractor and buckle as one complete unit.

The SRS airbag warning light Mitsubishi Outlander SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner warning light symbol is also used to indicate detected malfunctions in the seat belt pretensioner system.

If the SRS airbag warning light remains illuminated, flashes or otherwise operates as described for a system fault, have the pretensioner and Supplemental Restraint System inspected promptly. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service.

When selling the Mitsubishi Outlander, inform the new owner that the vehicle is equipped with front and second-row outboard seat belt pretensioners, and direct them to the relevant safety information, warnings and operating details in this Owner's Manual.
