The driver and front passenger SRS knee airbags are installed in the knee bolster areas on their respective sides of the Mitsubishi Outlander cabin.

All safety information, cautions and warnings provided in this manual apply to the knee airbag system and must be followed carefully.

The knee airbags are designed primarily to inflate during higher-severity frontal collisions. They may also deploy in another type of impact when the forces acting on the vehicle are similar to those produced by a severe frontal collision. Deployment will not occur in every accident, including some frontal impacts.

The amount of visible damage to the vehicle, or the absence of obvious damage, does not by itself indicate whether the knee airbags should have deployed.

When a knee airbag inflates, occupants may hear a loud noise followed by the release of a smoke-like residue. This residue is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. Avoid inhaling it whenever possible, however, because it may irritate the throat or cause temporary choking or breathing discomfort.

Anyone with a history of asthma or another respiratory condition should move into fresh air as soon as it is safe to do so.

The driver and front passenger SRS knee airbags supplement the primary protection provided by the seat belts. During certain moderate to severe frontal collisions, they can help limit forward movement of the lower legs and contribute to improved overall restraint of the driver's and front passenger's bodies.

The knee airbags inflate rapidly so they can provide protection during the early stages of a collision. Because deployment occurs with considerable speed and force, an occupant positioned too close to or directly against a knee airbag module may face a greater risk of injury. Depending on the system design and collision conditions, the knee airbag may deflate quickly after deployment or remain inflated for a short period.

The knee airbags can operate only when the ignition switch is in the ON position.

When the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, the SRS airbag warning light illuminates while the Mitsubishi Outlander performs an initial system check.

If the knee airbag and other monitored SRS components are operating normally, the warning light turns off after approximately 7 seconds.

WARNING

  • Do not place packages, accessories or other objects between either knee bolster and the driver or front passenger.

If a knee airbag inflates, these objects may be propelled toward an occupant and cause serious injury.

  • Knee airbag system components become extremely hot immediately after deployment. Do not touch the airbag module or nearby parts, as contact may cause severe burns.
  • Do not make unauthorized changes to any knee airbag component or wiring. Modifications may damage the system, prevent proper deployment or cause an airbag to inflate accidentally.
  • Do not alter the Mitsubishi Outlander electrical or suspension system without authorization. Changes to either system may interfere with the sensors, control unit or other components required for correct knee airbag operation.
  • Tampering with the knee airbag system can result in serious personal injury. Do not modify the driver or passenger knee bolster, cover the deployment area or install additional trim or accessories around either knee airbag module.
  • Mitsubishi Motors recommends having all work on or near the knee airbags performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Installation of electrical equipment should also be completed by qualified personnel familiar with the Supplemental Restraint System. The SRS wiring harnesses* must not be modified or disconnected.

Do not use unauthorized electrical test equipment, probes or diagnostic devices on the knee airbag circuits.

*The SRS wiring harnesses and connectors are colored yellow or orange so they can be identified easily during inspection and service.

When selling the Mitsubishi Outlander, inform the new owner that the vehicle is equipped with driver and front passenger SRS knee airbags and direct them to the relevant operating information, warnings and precautions in this manual.
