The three-point seat belt used in the Mitsubishi Outlander combines a lap belt and shoulder belt with a retractor that allows normal body movement while helping restrain the occupant during sudden braking or certain impacts. Correct seat position and proper belt routing are essential for the system to provide its intended protection.
WARNING
- Every person who drives or rides in this vehicle must wear a seat belt at all times.
Children should ride in the rear seats whenever possible and must be secured in an appropriate child restraint suitable for their size and age.
- Do not travel in a moving vehicle with the seatback excessively reclined. In this position, the shoulder belt may not remain correctly against the body. During a collision, an occupant could be thrown forward, suffer an injury to the neck from the shoulder belt or sustain other serious internal injuries.
- For the most effective protection while the Mitsubishi Outlander is moving, keep the seatback upright. Sit fully back in the seat with both feet on the floor and adjust the seat belt so it fits securely across the hips, shoulder and chest.
- Do not allow children to play with the seat belts. Most seating positions are equipped with seat belts that include an Automatic Locking Retractor [ALR] mode. If a belt becomes wrapped around a child's neck while ALR mode is active, the retractor may continue tightening the belt and cause serious injury or death, even while the vehicle is parked. Unfasten the seat belt immediately to release the child. If the buckle cannot be released, or if the belt is already unbuckled but remains tight, cut the webbing with a suitable tool, such as a knife or scissors, to free the child as quickly as possible.
Fastening the seat belts
1. Adjust the seat and seatback to a comfortable, upright position that allows proper access to the pedals, controls and seat belt.
2. Slowly pull the seat belt out of the retractor and insert the tongue into buckle A until you hear and feel the latch engage. Gently pull on the tongue to confirm that it is securely fastened.
- The retractor is designed to lock the belt during a sudden stop or certain impacts. Pulling the belt out slowly allows the webbing to extend normally and provides limited freedom of movement while seated.
- If the seat belt cannot be pulled from its fully retracted position, pull it firmly once and allow it to retract slightly. Then draw the belt out again using a smooth, steady motion.

3. Position the lap portion of the belt low and snug across the hips at point B, as illustrated. Do not place the lap belt across the abdomen or waist.

4. Pull the shoulder portion toward the retractor to remove excess slack at point C. Make sure the belt passes over the shoulder and diagonally across the chest without touching the neck or slipping off the shoulder.
The three-point seat belts fitted to the front passenger seat and rear seating positions of the Mitsubishi Outlander can operate in two different retractor modes:
- Emergency Locking Retractor [ELR] mode for normal occupant use.
- Automatic Locking Retractor [ALR] mode for securing a compatible child restraint.
The Emergency Locking Retractor [ELR] mode allows the seat belt to extend and retract as the occupant moves normally in the seat. The retractor locks the webbing when the vehicle decelerates rapidly or during certain types of impact.
The Automatic Locking Retractor [ALR] mode, also referred to as the child restraint mode, locks the belt at a selected length so it can hold an appropriate child restraint securely in position.
Once ALR mode has been activated, the seat belt cannot be extended farther until the tongue is removed from the buckle and the webbing is allowed to retract completely. After the belt has fully retracted, the system automatically returns to ELR mode.
Use ALR mode only when installing a child restraint as instructed. It should not be activated during normal seat belt use by an adult or larger child because the belt will continue tightening as it retracts and may create uncomfortable pressure against the occupant.
WARNING
- Before fastening a seat belt, make sure the seatback is fully upright and securely engaged in its latched position. An incompletely locked seatback may move during sudden braking or a collision, increasing the risk of serious injury to the occupant.
Unfastening the seat belts

To unfasten the seat belt, press release button 1 on the buckle. The tongue will disengage, and the belt will retract automatically into the retractor.
- As the belt retracts, hold the latch plate and guide the webbing back slowly. Allowing the tongue to strike the trim, window or other interior surfaces may cause damage to the Mitsubishi Outlander passenger compartment or twist the belt.
Checking seat belt operation
The seat belt retractors are designed to restrict belt movement under two different conditions:
- When the webbing is pulled rapidly from the retractor.
- When the vehicle slows down suddenly.
To confirm that the locking mechanism is operating correctly, perform the following check while the vehicle is parked:
- Grasp the shoulder belt and pull it forward with a quick, firm motion. The retractor should lock immediately and prevent the belt from extending farther.
If the retractor does not lock during this test, have the seat belt system inspected before the seating position is used again. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for service or for further information about correct seat belt operation.
Shoulder belt height adjustment (for front seats)

The height of the front shoulder belt anchor should be adjusted to suit the occupant's seating position and body size. Correct alignment helps the belt remain centered on the shoulder while staying clear of the face and neck.
To adjust the anchor, pull adjustment button 1 and move the shoulder belt guide upward or downward to the desired position 2. Set it so the belt passes across the center of the shoulder and diagonally over the chest. The belt should not rub against the face or neck, and it must not sit so far outward that it can slip off the shoulder. Release the adjustment button to lock the anchor in position.
The available shoulder belt height adjustment range may differ depending on the Mitsubishi Outlander model and equipment specification.
WARNING
- After adjusting the anchor, release the button and firmly move the shoulder belt guide upward and downward to confirm that it is securely locked and cannot shift unexpectedly.
- Set the shoulder belt anchor to the position that provides the best fit for the occupant. Incorrect belt height may reduce the effectiveness of the restraint system and increase the likelihood or severity of injury in a collision.
Seat belt clip
Example

When a rear seat belt is not in use, or before folding the second row or third row seats, secure the applicable outer seat belt webbing in its seat belt clip. This keeps the belt clear of the seatback, hinge and latch areas while the seat is being moved.
Do not insert or secure the metal seat belt tongue in the clip. The clip is intended to hold the webbing only.
WARNING
- Before folding or returning the second row or third row seats, make sure the seat belts are positioned away from the seatback latches and folding mechanisms. A trapped belt may prevent the seatback from locking correctly or damage the webbing, reducing the protection provided by the seat belt.
