The Mitsubishi Outlander engine cooling system is filled at the factory with a pre-diluted mixture consisting of 50% Mitsubishi Motors genuine Super Long Life Coolant Premium and 50% water. This mixture is designed to provide year-round cooling performance together with protection against freezing.
The factory coolant also contains corrosion and rust inhibitors that help protect internal cooling system components. Additional cooling system additives are therefore not required.
WARNING
- Never remove the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot. Allow the engine and radiator to cool completely before opening either cap.
Hot coolant in the system may be under pressure and can escape suddenly, causing severe burns or scalding.
- The radiator uses a pressure-type cap. To help prevent improper cooling system operation or engine damage, use only a genuine Mitsubishi Motors radiator cap of the correct type.
- The engine compartment may remain very hot even after the engine has operated only briefly. In addition, the cooling fan may continue operating for a period of time to cool engine compartment components. Whenever the fan is running, keep hands, clothing, tools, and other objects clear of the fan blades.
CAUTION
- Do not use cooling system additives such as radiator sealers. These products can restrict coolant passages, clog components, and cause damage to the engine, transmission, and/or cooling system.
- When adding or replacing coolant in the Mitsubishi Outlander, use only Mitsubishi Motors genuine Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) or an equivalent coolant that meets the required specifications.
Mitsubishi Motors genuine Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) is supplied pre-diluted and provides antifreeze protection down to -31ºF (-35ºC).
If additional freeze protection is required because of the climate in which the vehicle is operated, add Mitsubishi Motors genuine Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) concentrate according to the instructions printed on the container. If an equivalent coolant other than Mitsubishi Motors genuine Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) is used, follow the coolant manufacturer's directions to maintain at least -31ºF (-35ºC) antifreeze protection. Coolants other than Mitsubishi Motors genuine Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) or an approved equivalent may damage the engine cooling system.
- The expected service life of the factory-fill coolant is 105,000 miles (168,000 km) or 7 years. Mixing the factory-fill coolant with another type of coolant, including Mitsubishi Motors genuine Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (green), or adding non-distilled water will reduce the expected service life of the original coolant.
Checking engine coolant level

Check the coolant level in the reservoir only when the engine is cold and the Mitsubishi Outlander is parked on a level surface. If the coolant level is below MIN mark 2, remove the reservoir cap and add the specified coolant until the level reaches MAX mark 1.
If the coolant reservoir is empty, check the coolant level in the radiator after confirming that the engine is completely cold.
If the radiator coolant level is too low, add coolant through the radiator filler opening until the proper level is reached, then fill the reservoir to MAX level 1.
After adding engine coolant, reinstall and tighten the cap securely.
If the cooling system repeatedly requires additional coolant, this may indicate a leak or another cooling system problem. Have the Mitsubishi Outlander inspected. It is recommended that you visit an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service.
WARNING
- Do not fill the coolant reservoir above the MAX level. Overfilling can cause hot coolant to overflow or be forced out as the cooling system temperature and pressure increase.
Changing engine coolant
Engine coolant replacement can be performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer using the appropriate service procedures.
Improper cooling system service can reduce heater performance, interfere with coolant circulation, and lead to engine overheating.
Example

WARNING
- Never attempt to change the engine coolant while the engine is hot. Hot coolant and steam can cause severe burns.
- Never remove the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot. Pressurized coolant may escape suddenly and cause serious scalding or burns.
- Avoid direct skin contact with used engine coolant.
If coolant contacts your skin, wash the affected area thoroughly and immediately with soap or an appropriate hand cleaner.
- Keep new and used engine coolant out of the reach of children and pets.
Used engine coolant must be collected and disposed of properly in accordance with applicable environmental requirements.
Check local regulations for the correct disposal or recycling procedure in your area.
