Checking engine oil level

Mitsubishi Outlander engine oil dipstick level markings and checking procedure

1. Park the Mitsubishi Outlander on a firm, level surface and apply the parking brake securely.

2. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.

3. Turn the engine off and wait more than 10 minutes to allow the engine oil to drain back into the oil pan for an accurate level reading.

4. Remove the engine oil dipstick and wipe it completely clean with a suitable cloth.

Reinsert the dipstick fully into its tube.

5. Remove the dipstick again and check the oil level. The level should be within range C.

If the oil level is below mark A, remove the oil filler cap and add the recommended engine oil through the filler opening. Add oil gradually and do not allow the level to rise above mark B.

6. Recheck the engine oil level with the dipstick after adding oil to confirm that it is within the specified range.

It can be normal for the Mitsubishi Outlander to require some additional engine oil between scheduled oil maintenance intervals or during the break-in period. Oil consumption can vary depending on operating conditions and how severely the vehicle is used.

CAUTION

  • Check the engine oil level regularly. Operating the engine with an insufficient quantity of oil can cause serious engine damage, and damage resulting from inadequate engine oil is not covered by the warranty.

Changing engine oil and filter

WARNING

  • Used engine oil must be collected and disposed of properly.

Never pour used oil onto the ground or dispose of it in drains, canals, rivers, or other waterways. Take it to an appropriate waste collection or recycling facility. Mitsubishi Motors recommends having the engine oil changed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

  • Use caution when working around recently operated engine components because the engine oil may be hot enough to cause burns.
  • Prolonged and repeated skin contact with used engine oil may increase the risk of skin cancer.
  • Avoid direct contact between used engine oil and your skin. If contact occurs, wash the affected area immediately and thoroughly with soap or an appropriate hand cleaner and plenty of water.
  • Store used engine oil in clearly marked, properly sealed containers and keep it out of the reach of children.

Vehicle set-up

Mitsubishi Outlander vehicle lifting and safety jack stand support points for engine oil service

1. Park the Mitsubishi Outlander on a level surface and apply the parking brake securely.

2. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.

3. Turn the engine off and wait more than 10 minutes before beginning the oil change procedure.

4. Raise the vehicle using a suitable floor jack and support it securely with appropriate safety jack stands.

  • Position the safety jack stands under the designated vehicle support points A.
  • Fit a suitable adapter to the jack stand saddle as required for proper support.

5. Remove the engine undercover to gain access to the engine oil drain plug and filter.

  • Remove the clips positioned around the perimeter of the undercover.
  • Then remove the remaining bolts that secure the undercover in place.

CAUTION

  • Always use the specified lifting and support points when raising the Mitsubishi Outlander. Incorrect jack or stand placement can damage the body or underbody components and may create an unsafe working condition.

Engine oil and filter

  1. Oil filler cap
  2. Oil drain plug
  3. Oil filter

1. Position a drain pan of sufficient capacity directly beneath oil drain plug 2.

2. Remove oil filler cap 1 to allow the engine oil to drain more freely.

3. Using a suitable wrench, remove drain plug 2 and allow the engine oil to drain completely into the drain pan.

WARNING

  • Prolonged and repeated contact with used engine oil may increase the risk of skin cancer.
  • Avoid direct skin contact with used engine oil whenever possible. If oil contacts your skin, wash thoroughly and immediately with soap or an appropriate hand cleaner.
  • Keep used engine oil and containers holding used oil out of the reach of children.

CAUTION

  • Be careful when removing the drain plug because the engine oil may still be very hot and could cause burns.

  • Waste engine oil must be disposed of properly and responsibly.
  • Follow all applicable local regulations for used oil collection and disposal.

(Perform steps 4 to 7 only when the engine oil filter change is needed.)

4. Loosen oil filter 3 using an appropriate oil filter wrench. Once loosened, remove the filter by turning it by hand.

5. Carefully wipe the engine oil filter mounting surface with a clean rag so the new filter gasket can seat correctly.

CAUTION

  • Make sure all remnants of the old oil filter gasket are removed from the engine mounting surface. Installing a new filter over old gasket material can cause oil leakage and may result in serious engine damage.

6. Apply a light, even coating of clean engine oil to the gasket on the new oil filter before installation.

7. Screw the new oil filter clockwise onto the mounting point until slight resistance is felt as the gasket contacts the mounting surface. Then tighten the filter an additional more than 2/3 turn.

Oil filter tightening torque:
11 to 15 ft-lb
(14.7 to 20.6 Nꞏm)

8. Clean drain plug 2 and reinstall it with a new washer. Tighten the drain plug securely with a wrench to the specified torque.

Drain plug tightening torque:
22 to 29 ft-lb
(29.4 to 39.2 Nꞏm)

Do not use excessive tightening force, as this can damage the drain plug, washer, or oil pan threads.

9. Refill the Mitsubishi Outlander engine through the oil filler opening using the recommended engine oil, then install and tighten the oil filler cap securely.

10. Start the engine and inspect the areas around the oil drain plug and oil filter carefully for any signs of leakage.

Correct any leakage or installation problem before continuing to operate the vehicle.

11. Turn the engine off and wait more than 10 minutes. Check the engine oil level again with the dipstick and add oil if necessary to bring the level into the specified range.

After the operation

1. Reinstall the engine undercover in the reverse order of removal, making sure all clips and bolts are secured correctly.

2. Carefully lower the Mitsubishi Outlander from the safety stands and floor jack until the vehicle is fully supported on the ground.

3. Reset the oil control system, if so equipped, and reset the engine oil and oil filter maintenance reminder after completing the service.
