WARNING
- Fuel is extremely flammable and can be highly explosive under certain conditions. Improper handling can result in severe burns or other serious injuries. Always stop the engine before refueling, and never smoke or allow open flames, sparks, or other ignition sources near the Mitsubishi Outlander while fuel is being added.
Opening the fuel filler door

The fuel filler door is connected to the vehicle's electric door locking system. When the doors are unlocked, press the rear edge of the fuel filler door to release and open it.
NOTE
- After opening the fuel filler door, refuel the vehicle as soon as practical rather than leaving the filler area open unnecessarily.
Emergency opening of the fuel filler door

If the vehicle battery is discharged and the electric locking system cannot release the fuel filler door, use the following emergency procedure:
1. Remove the cover from the right-hand wall of the cargo area.
2. Using suitable tool A, move the release rod in the direction indicated by the arrow to manually unlock the fuel filler door.
The release rod is located behind the seat belt.
Move the seat belt rearward as necessary to gain access to the rod.
Use a flashlight if additional visibility is needed.
How to refuel
Instructional label

The Mitsubishi Outlander uses a capless fuel filler system, so there is no separate fuel filler cap to remove before refueling.
As illustrated, insert the fuel pump nozzle slowly and straight into the fuel filler opening until it is fully inserted before beginning to refuel.
Keep the nozzle in a stable position throughout refueling and do not move it unnecessarily while fuel is flowing.
Instructional label

When the fuel tank reaches its filling limit, the pump nozzle will stop refueling automatically. Wait approximately 5 seconds after automatic shutoff before removing the nozzle from the filler opening.
After refueling is complete, close the fuel filler door securely.
CAUTION
- Do not attempt to force open the internal flaps of the capless fuel filler using tools or objects other than the proper fuel pump nozzle.
- Make sure the fuel filler door is fully closed before entering an automatic car wash or using a high-pressure vehicle wash.
- If fuel is spilled on the painted bodywork, rinse the affected area promptly with water to help prevent damage to the paint finish.
WARNING
- Gasoline is extremely flammable and can be highly explosive under certain conditions.
Improper use or handling may cause severe burns or serious injury. Always stop the engine before refueling, and do not smoke or allow open flames, sparks, or other ignition sources near the vehicle.
- Before opening the fuel filler door, discharge any static electricity from your body by touching an unpainted metal part of the vehicle or the fuel pump. Static electricity can produce a spark capable of igniting fuel vapor.
- Carry out the entire refueling process yourself and do not allow another person to approach or assist at the fuel filler unnecessarily. A person carrying a static electrical charge could create a spark and ignite fuel vapor.
- Do not move away from the fuel filler while refueling is in progress. Activities such as getting back into the seat can allow static electricity to build up again, increasing the risk of ignition when you return to the filler area.
- Avoid breathing fuel vapors. Fuel contains substances that can be harmful if inhaled.
- Keep all doors and windows closed while refueling the Mitsubishi Outlander to reduce the possibility of fuel vapors entering the passenger compartment.
- Do not attempt to top off or overfill the tank after the pump nozzle shuts off automatically. Continuing to add fuel can cause overflow or fuel spray and may create a fire hazard.
- Never pour fuel directly into the throttle body in an attempt to start the vehicle.
- Do not fill a portable fuel container while it is inside the vehicle or on a trailer. Static electricity can ignite flammable liquid, vapor, or gas and cause an explosion. To reduce the risk of serious injury or death when filling a portable fuel container:
- Always place the container directly on the ground before filling it.
- Do not use electronic devices while filling the container.
- Keep the fuel pump nozzle in continuous contact with the container while fuel is being added.
- Use only approved portable containers designed for storing and transporting flammable liquids.

CAUTION
- If fuel is spilled on the vehicle body, rinse the affected area promptly with water to help prevent damage to the paint finish.
- Do not direct high-pressure water, such as from a pressure washer, into the capless fuel filler opening while the fuel filler door is open.
- The capless fuel filler opening is designed for use with standard fuel pump nozzles found at service stations.
Using a nozzle with a smaller-than-normal diameter may damage the filler opening or components of the Mitsubishi Outlander fuel system.
When refueling from a portable fuel container

When adding fuel from a portable fuel container, use the dedicated fuel filler funnel supplied with the vehicle. The funnel is stored beneath the cargo area floor.

Remove the fuel filler funnel from its storage location beneath the cargo area floor as shown in step 1. Insert the funnel firmly into the fuel filler opening so that it opens the internal fuel filler flaps, then add fuel through the funnel as shown in step 2.
After refueling is complete, carefully remove the funnel from the fuel filler opening. Wipe the funnel clean before returning it to its designated storage location in the Mitsubishi Outlander cargo area.
CAUTION
- Do not insert the nozzle or spout of a portable fuel container directly into the capless fuel filler opening.
Doing so may damage the filler opening or other components of the fuel system.
- Use only the fuel filler funnel provided with the vehicle.
Using an unsuitable funnel or another object may damage the capless fuel filler opening or the Mitsubishi Outlander fuel system.
