If the Mitsubishi Outlander must be started using a booster battery, follow the instructions and safety precautions below carefully to reduce the risk of injury and prevent damage to the vehicle's electrical system.
WARNING
- Improper jump-starting procedures can cause the battery to explode, which may result in severe injury or death. Incorrect connections can also damage the Mitsubishi Outlander.
- Explosive hydrogen gas may be present around the battery. Keep sparks, open flames, cigarettes, and other ignition sources away from the battery at all times.
- Do not allow battery fluid to contact your eyes, skin, clothing, or painted vehicle surfaces. Battery electrolyte contains corrosive sulfuric acid and can cause severe burns. If contact occurs, immediately flush the affected area thoroughly with plenty of water.
- Keep the battery and all battery-related components out of the reach of children.
- The booster battery must have a 12-volt rating. Using a battery with an incorrect voltage can damage the vehicle's electrical components.
- Whenever working on or near a battery, wear suitable eye protection such as safety goggles or industrial safety glasses. Remove rings, metal bracelets, watches, and other jewelry that could cause an electrical short. Do not lean directly over the battery during jump starting.
- Never attempt to jump start a frozen battery.
A frozen battery may rupture or explode and could cause serious personal injury.
- The Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped with an automatic engine cooling fan that may start operating at any time.
Keep hands, clothing, tools, and other objects away from the fan and surrounding moving components.

WARNING
- Always follow the jump-starting procedure described below in the correct sequence. Failure to do so could damage the charging or electrical system and may result in personal injury.
1. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle B, position vehicles A and B close enough for the jumper cables to reach both batteries safely.
Do not allow the two vehicles to touch.
2. Apply the parking brake securely on the Mitsubishi Outlander.
3. Push the park button to shift the transmission into the P (Park) position.
4. Switch off unnecessary electrical equipment, including the headlights, heater, air conditioner, audio system, and other accessories that may place an additional load on the battery.
5. Remove the battery vent caps if the battery is equipped with them. Cover the battery with a firmly wrung-out damp cloth to help reduce the risk associated with escaping battery gases.
6. Connect the jumper cables in the exact sequence shown in the illustration (
).
7. Start the engine of booster vehicle B and allow it to run for several minutes.
8. Maintain the engine speed of booster vehicle B at approximately 2,000 rpm, then attempt to start the engine of vehicle A.
CAUTION
- Do not operate the starter motor continuously for more than 10 seconds. If the Mitsubishi Outlander engine does not start immediately, place the ignition switch in the OFF position and wait at least 10 seconds before attempting to start it again.
9. After the engine starts, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order, removing the negative cable first and then the positive cable (
).
10. Reinstall the battery vent caps if equipped. Dispose of the damp cloth used to cover the battery vent openings carefully, because it may have been contaminated with corrosive battery acid.
Push starting
Do not attempt to start the Mitsubishi Outlander engine by pushing the vehicle.
CAUTION
- Models equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) cannot be push-started or tow-started.
Attempting either method may damage the transmission.
- Models equipped with a three-way catalytic converter should not be started by pushing because unburned fuel may enter and damage the catalyst.
- Never attempt to start the Mitsubishi Outlander by towing it. If the engine starts while the vehicle is being towed, the sudden forward movement could cause a collision with the towing vehicle.
