WARNING
- Failure to follow the warnings and instructions for selecting, installing and using a child restraint correctly could result in serious injury or death to a child or another occupant during sudden braking or a collision:
- Every child restraint must be installed and used exactly as intended. Read and follow all instructions supplied by the child restraint manufacturer, including the requirements for orientation, harness adjustment, attachment points and permitted seating positions.
- Never hold an infant or child on an adult's lap while the Mitsubishi Outlander is moving. Even a strong adult cannot hold a child securely against the forces created during sudden braking or a collision.
- Never place one seat belt around both a child and another passenger. Each occupant requires an individual restraint designed to fit and protect that person.
- Mitsubishi Motors recommends installing child restraints in a rear seating position. Studies indicate that children are safer when correctly restrained in the rear seat than in the front passenger seat. If a forward-facing child restraint must be installed in the front seat, follow the instructions in "Forward-facing child restraint installation using the seat belts."
- Even though the vehicle is equipped with an Advanced Airbag System, never install a rear-facing child restraint or infant restraint in the front passenger seat. Deployment of the front passenger airbag could strike the restraint with considerable force and seriously injure or kill the child. Rear-facing restraints must only be used in an appropriate rear seating position.
- Select a child restraint that fits both the child and the intended seating position in the Mitsubishi Outlander. Some restraints may be too large, may not sit securely on the seat cushion or may not be compatible with the available belt or anchor arrangement.
- Child restraint anchors are designed only for the loads produced by a correctly installed child restraint. Never use these anchors to secure adult seat belts, cargo, equipment or any other item. Improper use may damage the anchors and prevent a child restraint from being installed securely, increasing the risk of serious injury or death in a collision.
- Never use child restraint anchor points for adult seat belts, safety harnesses or cargo tie-downs.
- Do not install a child restraint that requires a top tether strap in the front passenger seat.
- Infants and children must always travel in a child restraint appropriate for their age, height and weight whenever the vehicle is in motion.
- When a child restraint is carried in the vehicle but is not occupied, secure it with the LATCH system or a seat belt as permitted by the restraint manufacturer. An unsecured restraint can move through the passenger compartment during sudden braking or a collision, injuring occupants or damaging the vehicle interior.
CAUTION
- A child restraint left inside a closed vehicle can become extremely hot. Before placing a child in the restraint, check the seat surface, harness hardware, buckle and any exposed metal or plastic components that may contact the child's skin.
The Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped with a universal child restraint anchorage system known as LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren). Compatible child restraints may use rigid connectors or flexible webbing-mounted attachments that connect directly to the vehicle's lower anchors.
If the child restraint is not compatible with the LATCH system, it may be installed using the vehicle's seat belt when permitted by the restraint manufacturer and the instructions in this manual.
Child restraints are available in many designs and sizes for infants and young children. When selecting a restraint for use in the Mitsubishi Outlander, consider the following requirements:
- Select only a child restraint carrying a certification label confirming compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 or the Canadian Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seats Safety Regulations (RSSR).
- Place the child restraint in the intended vehicle seating position and confirm that it sits securely, remains stable and is compatible with the Mitsubishi Outlander seat shape, seat belt arrangement and available anchor locations.
- If the restraint fits the vehicle, place the child in it and check all harness, buckle and support adjustments. The restraint must be suitable for the child's current height and weight, and every installation and usage procedure recommended by the manufacturer must be followed.
- If the combined weight of the child and child restraint is less than 65 lb (29.5 kg), either the LATCH lower anchors or the vehicle seat belt may be used for installation, as permitted by the restraint manufacturer. Do not use both installation methods at the same time.
- If the combined weight of the child and child restraint exceeds 65 lb (29.5 kg), install the restraint using the vehicle's seat belt rather than the lower anchors.
- Always follow the child restraint manufacturer's instructions, including all limits, belt-routing diagrams, tether requirements and procedures for checking installation tightness.
All U.S. states and Canadian provinces or territories require infants and small children to be secured in an approved child restraint whenever the vehicle is being operated. Canadian law also requires the top tether strap of a forward-facing child restraint to be attached to the designated tether anchor in the vehicle.
