Before installing a rear-facing child restraint in the Mitsubishi Outlander, review every warning and caution in the "Child safety" and "Child restraints" sections. Correct installation is essential because the restraint must remain firmly attached and positioned as intended before a child is placed in it.

Do not use the lower anchors when the combined weight of the child and child restraint exceeds 65 lb (29.5 kg). If the total weight is greater than 65 lb (29.5 kg), secure the child restraint with the vehicle seat belt instead of the LATCH lower anchors. Always observe the child restraint manufacturer's weight limits and follow all installation instructions supplied with the restraint.

Follow these steps to install a rear-facing child restraint using the LATCH system:

1. Place the child restraint on the selected second row outboard seat in the correct rear-facing position.

Follow the child restraint manufacturer's instructions for orientation, recline angle and contact with the vehicle seat.

  • Move the second row seat where the child restraint will be installed to its most rearward position.
  • Adjust the seatback three positions rearward from its most upright setting.

2. Connect both child restraint anchor attachments to the LATCH lower anchors for the selected outboard seating position.

Check each connector individually to confirm that it has engaged fully and is securely attached to the correct lower anchor.

Do not install the child restraint in the second row center seating position using the LATCH lower anchors.

3. If the child restraint uses webbing-mounted LATCH attachments, remove all unnecessary slack from the connector straps. Press firmly downward and rearward at the center of the child restraint with your hand while tightening the webbing. Compressing the Mitsubishi Outlander seat cushion and seatback during this step helps the restraint sit firmly against the vehicle seat.

4. Test the installation before placing the child in the restraint. Hold the child restraint close to the LATCH attachment path and push it firmly from side to side. Movement at the attachment point must not exceed 1 inch (25 mm). Pull the restraint forward as well to confirm that the LATCH connectors remain engaged and hold it securely.

If the child restraint moves too far, tighten the LATCH attachments and test it again. If a secure installation still cannot be achieved, reposition the restraint in another approved seating location or install it with the vehicle seat belt when permitted by the child restraint manufacturer.

Child restraints vary in shape and size, and not every model will fit every seating position or vehicle interior correctly.

5. Confirm that the child restraint is securely installed before every trip. If it has loosened or moved from its correct position, repeat steps 1 through 4 before placing the child inside.
