The Rear Seat Alert system operates under specific conditions to remind the driver that an item or passenger may be present in the rear seating area. Before leaving the Mitsubishi Outlander, always check the rear seats directly rather than relying solely on the alert system.

The Rear Seat Alert system is disabled by default.

The driver can enable the system through the multi-information display.

When the system is enabled:

  • The system is activated when a rear door is opened and closed within 10 minutes before the vehicle is driven. When the vehicle is started and the system has been activated, a visual message appears in the multi-information display to indicate that Rear Seat Alert is active.
  • If a rear door is opened and closed but the vehicle is not driven within approximately 10 minutes, the Rear Seat Alert system will not be activated.

For the system to become active, a rear door must be opened and closed and the vehicle must then be driven within the specified 10-minute period.

When the Rear Seat Alert system has been activated and the driver reaches a destination and exits the vehicle:

  • When the driver places the vehicle in the P (Park) position, a message appears in the multi-information display. The driver can select "Dismiss Message" or "Disable Alert" if desired.
  • With the system enabled, an audible horn alert will sound after the driver exits the vehicle unless a rear door is opened and closed within a short period, which deactivates the pending alert.
  • If the vehicle doors are locked before the alert is canceled by opening a rear door, the horn will sound.
  • If the Rear Seat Alert system is active and the liftgate is opened before a rear door is opened, the audible horn alert will be delayed until after the liftgate is closed.
  • If the audible horn alert sounds, the multi-information display will also show the message "Check Rear Seat" to remind the driver to inspect the rear seating area.

WARNING

  • If the driver selects "Disable Alert", the audible horn alert will not be provided for the remainder of the applicable trip, regardless of whether a rear door is subsequently opened or closed.
  • There may be situations in which an object or passenger is present in the rear seat but the audible alert does not sound. For example, this can occur if rear-seat passengers enter or leave the Mitsubishi Outlander during a trip.
  • The Rear Seat Alert system does not directly detect passengers or objects in the rear seats. Instead, it monitors rear-door opening and closing activity as an indication that something or someone may have been placed in the rear seating area.

NOTE

There may also be situations in which the horn alert sounds even though no passengers or objects remain in the rear seats.
