The driver and front passenger seats in the Mitsubishi Outlander are equipped with an enhanced seat belt reminder system. A visual warning and audible chime may operate when the driver's or front passenger's seat belt remains unfastened while the vehicle is traveling at approximately 10 MPH (15 km/h) or faster under any of the following conditions:
- The driver's seat belt is not securely fastened.
- The front passenger seat is occupied and the passenger's seat belt remains unfastened for 7 seconds after the ignition switch is placed in the ON position.
- The front passenger's seat belt is not fastened and an object or external pressure on the seat causes the seat belt reminder system to classify the seating position as occupied.
The seat belt warning light will continue flashing under the conditions described above until the corresponding seat belt is inserted into the correct buckle and securely fastened.
A warning chime will sound for approximately 95 seconds, or until one of the following conditions occurs:
- The unfastened front passenger seat belt is securely buckled.
- The front passenger seat belt reminder system no longer detects the seating position as occupied.
- The ignition switch is turned off.
The following situations may cause the seat belt warning light to illuminate and the reminder chime to sound even when no passenger is seated in the front passenger position:
- A heavy object, package or other load is placed on the seat cushion.
- Someone pushes, pulls or applies pressure to the front passenger seat.
- An object is positioned beneath the front passenger seat and affects the seat or its sensors.
- An item is wedged between the seat cushion and the center console, or between the seat cushion and the door.
- An object is hanging from the seat or has been placed in one of the seatback pockets.
- A child restraint system or another object presses against the rear of the front passenger seatback.
The rear seating positions are also monitored by a seat belt warning shown in the Mitsubishi Outlander multi-information display, allowing the driver to check the belt status of rear passengers.
Pregnant women
Mitsubishi Motors recommends that pregnant occupants wear a seat belt whenever the vehicle is moving. The belt should fit snugly without uncomfortable pressure, and the lap portion must be positioned as low as possible around the hips rather than across the waist or abdomen.
Route the shoulder belt over the shoulder and diagonally across the chest. Never place the lap or shoulder portion directly over the abdominal area, and do not position the shoulder belt behind the back or under the arm.
Consult your doctor for recommendations based on your stage of pregnancy and individual medical needs before traveling in the Mitsubishi Outlander.
Injured persons
Mitsubishi Motors recommends that injured occupants use seat belts whenever their condition permits. The correct belt position may depend on the nature and location of the injury, so consult a doctor for specific guidance before traveling.
