Brake assist

When the force applied to the brake pedal exceeds a certain threshold, the Brake Assist system activates and provides additional braking force. This allows the Mitsubishi Outlander to generate stronger braking performance than a conventional brake booster even when the driver does not apply extremely high pedal pressure.

  • Brake Assist is only a supplemental braking aid. It is not a collision warning or collision avoidance system. The driver remains responsible for staying alert, driving safely, monitoring surrounding traffic, and maintaining control of the Mitsubishi Outlander at all times.

Anti-lock Braking System [ABS]

  • The Anti-lock Braking System [ABS] is an advanced braking aid, but it cannot prevent accidents caused by careless, aggressive, or unsafe driving. ABS can help the driver maintain directional control during hard braking, particularly on slippery surfaces. However, stopping distances on slippery roads may still be longer than on dry pavement even when ABS is operating. Stopping distances can also increase on rough roads, gravel, snow-covered surfaces, or when tire chains are installed.

    Always maintain an appropriate and safe distance from the vehicle ahead. The driver is ultimately responsible for operating the Mitsubishi Outlander safely.

  • Tire type, size, and condition can also affect overall braking performance.
    • When replacing tires, use the specified tire size on all four wheels to help maintain proper ABS operation and vehicle stability.

The Anti-lock Braking System [ABS] controls brake pressure to help prevent the wheels from locking during hard braking or while braking on slippery road surfaces. The system monitors the rotational speed of each wheel and continuously adjusts hydraulic brake pressure as necessary. By reducing the likelihood of wheel lockup and uncontrolled sliding, ABS helps the driver retain steering control and can reduce the tendency of the Mitsubishi Outlander to skid, swerve, or spin during emergency braking.

Using the system

Depress the brake pedal and continue holding it firmly.

Apply strong, steady pressure to the brake pedal and do not pump the brakes. The ABS will automatically modulate brake pressure to help prevent wheel lockup. Continue steering the vehicle as necessary to avoid obstacles while maintaining firm brake pressure.

  • Do not pump the brake pedal during ABS operation. Pumping the brakes can reduce system effectiveness and may increase stopping distance.

Self-test feature

The ABS incorporates electronic sensors, electric pumps, hydraulic solenoids, and a control computer that work together to monitor and regulate braking performance.

The control computer includes a built-in diagnostic function that checks ABS operation each time the engine is started and the Mitsubishi Outlander begins moving at low speed, either forward or in reverse. During this self-test, you may hear a brief "clunk" sound or feel a slight pulsation through the brake pedal. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction. If the computer detects a fault, it disables the ABS function and illuminates the ABS warning light on the instrument panel. Conventional braking remains available, but anti-lock braking assistance will no longer operate.

If the ABS warning light illuminates during the self-test or remains on while driving, have the vehicle inspected. It is recommended that you visit an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service.

Normal operation

The ABS operates at vehicle speeds above approximately 3 to 6 MPH (5 to 10 km/h), depending on road and driving conditions.

When the system detects that one or more wheels are approaching lockup, the ABS actuator rapidly increases and decreases hydraulic brake pressure to maintain wheel rotation and traction.

This action is similar to extremely rapid automatic brake pumping. During ABS operation, the driver may feel pulsation through the brake pedal, hear mechanical or hydraulic noises from beneath the hood, or feel vibration from the actuator. These sensations are normal and indicate that the ABS is functioning as intended.

The presence of strong pedal pulsation can also indicate that road traction is limited. Drive the Mitsubishi Outlander with increased caution and adjust speed to current road conditions.
