WARNING

  • Never drive the Mitsubishi Outlander with the parking brake applied. Continuous driving with the brake engaged can cause it to overheat, reduce braking effectiveness, and potentially lead to an accident.
  • Never release the parking brake from outside the vehicle. If the vehicle begins to move, you will not be able to operate the foot brake pedal, creating a serious risk of an accident.
  • Do not rely on the shift lever as a substitute for the parking brake. Whenever parking the vehicle, make sure the parking brake is fully applied.
  • To reduce the risk of injury or death caused by unintended operation of the vehicle or its systems, never leave children, people who require assistance, or pets unattended inside the Mitsubishi Outlander.

On warm days, the temperature inside a closed vehicle can also rise rapidly to dangerous levels, creating a serious risk of severe injury or death to occupants or animals.

CAUTION

  • Do not place bags, objects, or other items near the parking brake switch. An object interfering with the switch may cause the electric parking brake warning light (yellow) to illuminate.

If this occurs, remove the object. If the warning light turns off within approximately 10 seconds, the condition does not indicate a malfunction.

Mitsubishi Outlander electric parking brake switch with apply and release positions

The electric parking brake can be released automatically during normal vehicle operation or manually by using the parking brake switch.

Automatic operation

The electric parking brake releases automatically when the Mitsubishi Outlander begins to move and the accelerator pedal is depressed, provided all of the following conditions are satisfied.

  • The engine is running.
  • The shift lever is in the D (Drive) or R (Reverse) position.
  • The driver's door is closed.

WARNING

  • Before leaving the vehicle, shift to the P (Park) position and confirm that the electric parking brake warning light is illuminated, indicating that the electric parking brake is applied. The warning light may remain illuminated for a short period after the driver's door has been locked.

CAUTION

  • When parking in an area where the outside temperature is below 32ºF (0ºC), do not apply the parking brake if there is a risk that it may freeze.

For safe parking under these conditions, place the shift lever in P (Park) and securely block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving.

NOTE

  • If the electric parking brake system malfunctions, for example because of a discharged battery, it is recommended that you contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
  • If the shift lever is moved to P (Park) while braking force is being maintained by the Brake Auto Hold function, the electric parking brake will apply automatically.
  • If the driver's seat belt is unfastened while braking force is being maintained by Brake Auto Hold, the electric parking brake will apply automatically.
  • If the ignition switch is placed in the OFF position while Brake Auto Hold is maintaining braking force, the electric parking brake will apply automatically.
  • Before driving, confirm that the electric parking brake warning light (yellow) is no longer illuminated.

Manual operation

To apply: With the vehicle completely stopped, pull parking brake switch 1 upward. The electric parking brake can be applied even when the ignition switch is in the "OFF" position. Indicator light A and the electric parking brake warning light (red) will illuminate.

To release: With the ignition switch in the ON position, depress the brake pedal and push parking brake switch 2 downward. Indicator light A and the electric parking brake warning light (red) will turn off.

Before driving the Mitsubishi Outlander, confirm that the electric parking brake warning light (red) has gone out. For more information, refer to "Warning lights, indicator lights and audible reminders".

NOTE

  • An operating sound may be heard from beneath the rear seat area while the electric parking brake is being applied or released. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction.
  • If the electric parking brake is applied and released repeatedly within a short period, the electric parking brake warning light (yellow) may blink and the system may temporarily stop operating to prevent overheating. If this occurs, wait approximately 1 minute before operating the parking brake switch again.
  • If the electric parking brake must be applied while driving in an emergency, pull the parking brake switch upward and continue holding it. Releasing the switch will release the parking brake.
  • While the electric parking brake switch is held upward during driving, the parking brake is applied and a warning chime sounds. The electric parking brake warning light in the meter and the indicator in the parking brake switch will illuminate. This does not indicate a malfunction. Both indicators will turn off when the parking brake is released.
  • If the electric parking brake switch is pulled upward while the ignition switch is in the OFF or ACC position, the parking brake switch indicator light may remain illuminated for a short period.

Depending on the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer and the steepness of the slope, the Mitsubishi Outlander may have a tendency to roll backward when starting from a standstill while towing.

In this situation, the electric parking brake switch can be used in a manner similar to a conventional hand-operated parking brake lever to help control vehicle movement.

Before starting on an incline while towing a trailer, use the following procedure to reduce the risk of the vehicle rolling backward unintentionally.

  • Push the parking brake switch downward to release the electric parking brake as soon as the engine is producing sufficient torque at the wheels to move the vehicle forward.
