When the liftgate is completely closed, it can be opened automatically to its fully open position using any of the following controls:

  • Press and hold power remote liftgate switch A on the instrument panel for more than 1 second.
  • Press liftgate opener switch B.
  • Press and hold power remote liftgate button C on the key for more than 1 second.

NOTE

  • The Mitsubishi Outlander power liftgate can be opened using instrument panel switch A, liftgate opener switch B, or transmitter button C even when the liftgate is locked. The liftgate can be unlocked and opened independently while the other vehicle doors remain locked.

Power close

When the liftgate is fully open, it can be closed automatically to the fully latched position using any of the following controls:

  • Press power remote liftgate switch A on the instrument panel.
  • Press and hold power remote liftgate button C on the key for more than 1 second.
  • Press power remote liftgate close switch D located on the lower part of the liftgate.

The outside chime sounds 3 times when the Mitsubishi Outlander liftgate begins its automatic closing movement.

Power close and lock

When the liftgate is open, pressing power remote liftgate close and lock switch E on the lower section of the liftgate will automatically close the liftgate completely and then lock it.

When this function is activated, the hazard warning lights flash 2 times and the outside chime sounds as the liftgate begins closing.

Stop and reverse function

While the power remote liftgate is opening or closing automatically, its movement will stop immediately if any of the following actions is performed:

  • Pressing power remote liftgate switch A.
  • Pressing liftgate opener switch B.
  • Pressing power remote liftgate close switch D on the lower part of the liftgate.
  • Pressing power remote liftgate button C on the key.
  • The kick motion sensor detects a kicking motion, if the Mitsubishi Outlander is so equipped.

If any of the actions listed above is performed again after the power remote liftgate has stopped, the liftgate will begin moving in the opposite direction.

The outside chime sounds when the Mitsubishi Outlander liftgate starts reversing, providing an audible indication that its direction of movement has changed.

Auto reverse function

The auto-reverse function is designed to reverse the power liftgate automatically if an obstruction is detected while the liftgate is opening or closing.

When the control unit detects an obstacle during powered operation, the liftgate reverses direction and moves toward the fully open or fully closed position, depending on the direction in which it was traveling.

If a second obstacle is detected during the same operating cycle, liftgate movement will stop and the system will switch to manual mode.

A pinch sensor is installed on each side of the liftgate opening. If either sensor detects an obstruction while the power liftgate is closing, the Mitsubishi Outlander liftgate will immediately reverse direction and return to the fully open position.

NOTE

  • If a pinch sensor is damaged, disconnected, or removed, the power closing function will not operate.

WARNING

  • There is a small area immediately before the liftgate reaches the fully closed position where an obstruction may not be detected. Before closing the liftgate, make sure all passengers keep their hands, fingers, and other body parts clear of the liftgate opening.

CAUTION

  • The safety mechanism may not operate in every situation, depending on the shape, position, or manner in which an object is trapped. Always use particular care to prevent hands, fingers, other body parts, or objects from being caught in the liftgate.
  • If the safety mechanism is activated repeatedly, the power remote liftgate may switch to manual operation. Normal automatic operation becomes available again after the liftgate has been moved to the fully open or fully closed position.

Manual mode

If powered operation is unavailable, the liftgate can still be opened or closed manually. Power operation may become unavailable if several obstacles are detected during a single powered cycle or if the vehicle battery voltage is too low.

When the power remote liftgate function is turned off, the liftgate can be opened manually by pressing the liftgate opener switch. If the power remote liftgate opener switch is pressed while the Mitsubishi Outlander liftgate is opening or closing automatically, powered movement will be canceled and the liftgate can then be operated manually.
