If Hill Descent Control has been switched on but the indicator light is flashing, the system is selected but is not currently engaged.

If the indicator light neither illuminates nor flashes when Hill Descent Control is turned on, the system may not be functioning correctly. Have the Mitsubishi Outlander inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

Mitsubishi Outlander low tire pressure and TPMS warning light symbol Low tire pressure warning light

The Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System [TPMS] that monitors the inflation pressure of all four tires.

The low tire pressure warning light alerts the driver when one or more tires may be underinflated. The same light is also used to indicate a malfunction in the TPMS.

When the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, the warning light illuminates for approximately 1 second and then turns off as part of the normal system check.

 Low tire pressure warning

If the Mitsubishi Outlander is driven with one or more tires at low pressure, the warning light will illuminate.

The message "Tire Pressure Low - Add Air" will also appear in the multi-information display.

When the low tire pressure warning light comes on, stop the vehicle in a safe location and adjust all tire pressures to the recommended COLD values shown on the Tire and Loading Information placard. The warning light may not turn off immediately after the tires are inflated. Once the correct pressure has been restored, the vehicle must be driven at more than 16 MPH (25 km/h) so the TPMS can detect the updated pressure and clear the warning.

Use an accurate tire pressure gauge to check the pressure in each tire rather than relying only on visual inspection.

The "Tire Pressure Low - Add Air" message remains active for as long as the low tire pressure warning light stays illuminated.

 TPMS malfunction

If the TPMS develops a malfunction, the low tire pressure warning light will flash for approximately 1 minute after the ignition switch is placed in the ON position. It will then remain steadily illuminated. Have the system inspected. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service. When the light is indicating a TPMS malfunction, the "Tire Pressure Low - Add Air" message may not appear.

WARNING

  • If the low tire pressure warning light does not illuminate when the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, have the vehicle inspected immediately. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service.
  • If the warning light illuminates while driving, avoid sudden steering inputs and hard braking. Reduce speed gradually, move off the road to a safe location and stop the Mitsubishi Outlander as soon as possible. Driving with underinflated tires can cause permanent tire damage, increase the risk of tire failure and lead to loss of vehicle control, a collision, serious injury or vehicle damage.

Check the inflation pressure of all four tires.

Adjust each tire to the recommended COLD pressure shown on the Tire and Loading Information placard. If the warning light remains illuminated while driving after the pressures have been corrected, one of the tires may be flat or the TPMS may be malfunctioning.

If a tire is flat, use the tire repair kit as instructed. If none of the tires is flat and all four are inflated correctly, consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

  • If a wheel without a compatible TPMS sensor is installed, the monitoring system will not operate correctly. The low tire pressure warning light will flash for approximately 1 minute and then remain illuminated. Mitsubishi Motors recommends consulting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
  • Installing tires that do not meet the specifications provided by Mitsubishi Motors may interfere with proper TPMS operation.
  • The TPMS does not replace routine manual tire pressure checks. Inspect tire pressure regularly with an accurate gauge, including when no warning is displayed.
  • At vehicle speeds below 16 MPH (25 km/h), the TPMS may not update or operate as expected.
  • Install the specified tire size correctly on all four wheels to support proper handling and reliable TPMS operation.

Mitsubishi Outlander malfunction indicator light symbol Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)

If the Malfunction Indicator Light remains steadily illuminated or begins flashing while the engine is running, the Mitsubishi Outlander may have detected a potential fault in the emission control system and/or the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

The Malfunction Indicator Light may also illuminate steadily if the vehicle has run out of fuel.

Confirm that the fuel tank contains at least 3 US gallons (11.4 liters) of fuel.

If no other emission control system fault is present, the Mitsubishi Outlander illuminated malfunction indicator light warning light should turn off after several driving trips.

If the indicator remains on for 20 seconds and then flashes for 10 seconds while the engine is not running, the Mitsubishi Outlander is not ready for an emission control system inspection and maintenance test.

 Operation

The Malfunction Indicator Light can operate in either of the following ways:

  • Malfunction Indicator Light illuminated steadily - The system has detected a possible emission control and/or CVT malfunction. Have the vehicle inspected. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for this service. Towing is not normally required solely because the light remains steadily illuminated.
  • Malfunction Indicator Light flashing - The engine control system has detected a misfire that could damage the emission control system.

To reduce the risk of emission control system damage:
    1. Do not drive faster than 45 MPH (72 km/h).

    2. Avoid rapid acceleration, hard braking and sudden changes in engine load.

    3. Avoid driving on steep uphill grades whenever possible.

    4. If practical, reduce the amount of cargo being carried or the load being towed.

The Malfunction Indicator Light may stop flashing and remain steadily illuminated after the immediate misfire condition changes.

Have the Mitsubishi Outlander inspected as soon as practical. Mitsubishi Motors recommends visiting an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for diagnosis and service. The vehicle does not normally need to be towed solely because the light has changed from flashing to steady illumination.

CAUTION

  • Continuing to drive without having the emission control system and/or CVT inspected and repaired as necessary may result in poor engine or transmission performance, reduced fuel economy and possible damage to emission-related components.
